A dog owner has vowed to only buy her pet blue toys after a TikTok filter revealed what a dog’s eyesight looks like.
In a video with over 26 million views, using a popular filter called Dog Vision shows a color-muted version of a woman’s bedroom.
“I only buy blue toys from now on,” declared TikToker @im.muddyy in a viral video featuring her 8-year-old Doberman Banks.
What Colors Do Dogs See?
Dogs have rod-dominated retinas meaning their eyes are mainly made up of rod cells. Rod cells are highly sensitive to light and are particularly suited for low-light conditions.
Newly aware that her dog can only see blue, yellow and some orange colors, the dog owner says she will only buy blue dog toys from now on.
“Only blue toys from this point on because everyone deserves some color in their lives,” the dog’s owner wrote in the caption of the video.
Talking to Newsweekthe TikToker said that her pup really does seem more interested in blue toys: “She really is able to see blue and yellow toys much better in the grass when we play fetch,” she said.
Because of their rod-dominated retinas, dogs have a reduced ability to see colors with the same accuracy as humans, with a cone-dominated retina that is more sensitive to different wavelengths of light.
Where humans see a full spectrum of colors, dogs have what’s called dichromatic color vision, meaning they see the world in shades of blue and yellow.
The TikTok filter that has been used thousands of times in video reposts removes tones that can’t be recognized by a dog’s eyes like red and green and leaves only shades of blue and yellow.
PDSA Vet Lynne James said Newsweek: “Dogs’ senses may mean they experience the world in a different way to us, but that doesn’t mean they’re missing. Dogs see colors, just not the same number of colors as we do. Their range is closest to what a person with red-green color blindness can see.”
But online there is a lot of concern for the idea that our canine friends may be losing their sight.
“I need someone to put those colorblind glasses on dogs,” said one commenter. While another viewer of the viral video wrote: “Explaining why my dog’s favorite color is blue.”
But James explains that while things may not be as bright and vibrant for our dogs, they have other visual benefits that we can only dream of.
“Having more rod cells means they have better vision than us in very low light,” the veterinarian said. “This is why you might see your dog barking at night at something you can’t see, or why they can see tiny movements in the undergrowth that we’re walking past.”
While some agreed with the TikToker that they would only choose blue toys from now on, others pointed out that their dogs love a whole spectrum of toys.
“I always let my dog pick his toys and he always picks red toys,” said one viewer. While another said: “Our dog loves orange.”
