Contrary to popular belief, cats are not aloof and uncaring. In fact, we look after our people. And we know a lot about you. Things you don’t know we know. Sometimes even things you don’t know about yourself. Sounds like we have superpowers, doesn’t it? And in a way, that’s exactly right.
Here are just a few things cats know about you — that you don’t!
- Your cat knows where you are at home at all times.
So you think your cat spends all day sleeping and doesn’t know what’s going on around the house? No! With our refined hearing, we know what’s going on. That’s why as soon as my guy starts setting things up in my photo studio, there I am, ready for a session. Even if I just bumped into the cat bed.Your cat watches over you every moment you are at home. The only reason they don’t rise to see is that they don’t think it’s necessary or important. But if something strange or unusual happens, we’ll be there — or we’ll hide until the activity dies down.
- Cats know where you’ve been.
So you had a big, juicy burger while you were out. Or you visit a friend and her cat sits next to you the entire visit. Don’t bother trying to hide it. Your cat knows where you’ve been and what you’ve been doing. Our noses are super sensitive. They should be. Scent detection is a survival mechanism in the wild. So we know where the food is, and where the threat is. And where are the rivals. Here is a funny story. Many years ago, my man had a calico cat that was very possessive of him. And after a while, one of the neighbor’s cats came to visit often. And of course my man would let him hang out. A few hours after he disappeared, his cat would come out, and start sniffing him. And as soon as he smells another cat, he starts purring like a jealous girlfriend.
Fortunately, I’m not that possessive. But I will wake up from a dead sleep if my man eats chicken. He is not allowed to have one alone.
- Your cat knows your schedule better than you do.
Cats love routine, and schedules are second nature to them. So once you set up a schedule they’re used to, they remember. And if you forget something they consider important (usually involving food), they’ll let you know! - Your cat knows when you are sick.
Of course you act differently when you’re feeling bad, and your cat (and maybe the people around you) will notice. But it is more than that. Many diseases cause chemical and hormonal changes, and your cat’s sensitive nose is affected by them. Perhaps this is one of the reasons cats make great therapy animals. They know the patients around them need their care.I continue to hope that one day researchers will understand how to harness this talent of ours and refine it like they did with dogs.
It’s not based on illness, but your cat also knows when you (or someone close to them) is pregnant. This is down to hormonal changes again. A cat can know when their human is expecting before a human does!
- Your cat knows when you are scared or stressed.
Fear is another thing that changes your scent – and even if you try to hide your feelings, your cat knows. And since cats are emotional sponges, your fear and your stress will affect them negatively and they may act out. This is also one of the reasons why your cat knows you are taking them to the vet before you even take the carrier out. Admit it — you dread visiting the vet almost as much as your cat does. And when one is coming, you’re probably thinking about all the hassle of it, getting your cat into the carrier and how difficult the car ride will be. And if you’re worried that your cat might actually be sick, that just makes it worse. Your cat knows all this, and that’s why they act the way they do, sometimes even a day before the vet visit.
Did any of this surprise you? Or did you already know that your cat is practically psychic? Do you have any stories to tell? Let’s talk about it in the comments!
