What we know…
- Reports of sick and dying pets continue to come in from pet owners.
- Reports of sick and dying pets continue to be linked to many brands and types (both wet and dry) of pet foods.
- The symptoms of sick pets remain constant; diarrhea – often bloody, vomiting – often bloody, in many cases seizures, in many cases death.
- Reports of pet food being dumped in landfills continue to come in from pet owners (putting wildlife at risk of illness and death).
- Reports of empty pet store shelves continue to come in from pet owners, unavailability of brands and/or specific products.
What is being done?
We can share that we have contacted the FDA.
We can share that many individuals have spent countless hours investigating. We are not sitting and waiting for the FDA, we are working as hard as possible to have evidence that will result in a recall. Unfortunately, these things take time.
An entity that knows best, has received many (perhaps thousands) of reports from pet owners, has the authority to test pet foods at almost any lab across the US, have scientists confirm the contaminant responsible…is FDA. And they don’t talk.
Many individuals have made requests through the Freedom of Information Act requesting information from the FDA, none have received any information (to our knowledge).
Is the FDA’s silence a good sign or a bad sign? We just don’t know.
All we know is that it is very real, very serious, and only the FDA can put an end to it with a proper investigation.
The only thing pet owners can do – is to continue to report all illnesses believed to be associated with a pet food to the FDA and your state authority. (Click Here for links to various pet food authorities.) The more information the FDA has will (hopefully) help their investigation. The FDA needs valid medical information, which your veterinarian can provide. They need the brand names and lot numbers of every pet food that may be involved. Please continue to report all pet illnesses and deaths.
From Dr. Judy Morgan: If pet owners want to have a necropsy or post-mortem exam, please have the veterinarian save the whole animal. Don’t just take a tissue sample and put it in formalin. Stomach contents should be examined, as it relates to food ingestion, as well as urine samples. The vet can contact us if needed.
Pet owners can also email the FDA – [email protected] – and ask the agency to update pet owners with a public notice. We definitely deserve some kind of FDA update.
And we will continue our investigation behind the scenes. Once we have evidence, it will be shared with pet owners and regulators.
Wishing you and your pet(s) the best,
