A 3-year-old dog can barely contain his excitement after discovering his backyard is filled with hundreds of his favorite toys.
Hudson the mini Labradoodle was clearly delighted after he went outside to play, and found his entire lawn covered in toy ball ropes.
His owner, Kacie from Seattle, couldn’t think of a better gift for Hudson to enjoy with some of his best canine friends whom he affectionately christened “his pack.”
“He is the sweetest, kindest and most dedicated puppy who loves everyone and plays with other dogs,” Kacie said. “He is playful yet careful and has very soulful eyes that speak to you. Hudson constantly reminds us how to show love in our lives.”
Social interaction with other dogs is an important and often overlooked part of maintaining good dog health.
Its value was highlighted in a recent study of 21,000 dogs published in the journal Evolution, Medicine, and Public Health. The researchers concluded that those who enjoyed regular social interaction with other dogs were associated with better health outcomes compared to other dogs who had less socialization.
Toys are a great way to encourage dogs to interact with each other, whether it’s competing in games of fetch or engaging in tug of war.
Hudson’s backyard full of toys was donated as part of the annual “Letters to Chewy Claus” program, an initiative set up by Chewy, the online pet food and pet product retailer, around the holidays.
As part of the scheme, pet owners are invited to submit a holiday gift suggestion for their four-legged friend. “Chewy” Claus then reviews the submissions to determine who has been naughty or nice and, ultimately, whether or not their Christmas wish will be granted.
Kacie was shopping on the Chewy website when she decided to write a letter asking for “a million ball rope toys” to be delivered to their house. “I did it for the joy of the letter being created and to send it to my wife for a cute holiday memory,” she said.
It’s also an opportunity to bring Hudson and his canine friends together for an epic play and for Katie to celebrate her dog’s friendly and loving personality in the best way possible.
“Hudson has some canine friends that people have to be careful about saying his name around them because they get too excited and think he’s coming to play,” Kacie said. “I also love when I see strangers immediately smile when they see her as we walk by. Her happy energy is contagious and we love that there are so many ‘catch-ups’ around her.”
A spokesperson for Chewy said Newsweek: “The moment we chatted with Kacie, we knew Hudson was a special dog who not only brought so much love and joy to his pet parents, but was also the first to make friends with any other dog in the area .”
They have organized for a grand total of 5,000 individual toys to be delivered over what they hope will be “enough lifetimes” of playing together. Toys were removed and arranged throughout Hudson’s yard in preparation for his epic surprise.
What followed was the playdate of a lifetime, with Hudson and his “pack” spending their day chasing toys, playing tug of war and generally running around to their heart’s content.
“We had an idea of what our yard would look like filled with ball rope toys…but the real thing is 10,000x better,” says Kacie. “Hudson and his buddies were over the moon; the experience from start to finish was incredible and we are very grateful that Chewy Claus made Hudson’s wish come true.”
When Hudson and his crew were exhausted and had each chosen a few toys to call their own, Kacie decided that the remaining toys should be given to other less fortunate pets living at PAWS and the Seattle Humane, two of the largest dog shelters in the city.
“Today, every pet that is adopted will go home with a toy for the holidays and all pets in shelters will have tons of toys to play with for years to come,” the spokesperson said. Chewy.
This represents the largest donation of toys ever for these shelters, with Kacie eager to spread a little festive cheer during what can be a difficult time for rescue pets.
Kacie said: “We decided to share the toys with other pets in Seattle with the hope that they will experience the same amount of joy, happiness and excitement that Hudson and his friends experienced from their surprise Chewy Claus , especially during the holiday season.”
