Do you give your dog a bone to chew on? According to veterinarian Amir Anwary, you might want to rethink this. As a veterinarian, he says he doesn’t condone giving your dog any bones to chew on, but he also admits to giving bones to his dogs himself.
He shared a video on Wednesday, March 6th and said that if you’re going to give your dog a bone, these five are the worst to give them, and avoid them at all costs. Can you guess which one is the worst?
It means a lot, and Dr. Anwary has made many commenters reconsider giving their dogs any bones. He did clarify one thing in the comments, “Don’t give any bones as a vet recommendation. But if you do, only raw bones.” The worst bones you can give your dog include cooked bones, chicken and turkey bones, pork bones, bones with sharp edges (like lamb chops), and rib bones. What seems to be a common theme is that all of these can be destructive and cause internal perforations. And possibly, they will also choke.
Unfortunately, I have personal experience with pork bones; we have a West Highland Terrier and when he was a puppy, he got into our garbage can and ate pig bones. Thousands of dollars and several surgeries later, he survived the damage the bones had done to his stomach. I will not feed any dog bones!

Things to Give Dogs to Chew on
If you have a dog that likes to chew and chew, there are safer alternatives you can give them other than bones. If you’re running a list in your head of things that are safe for dogs to chew, I bet Kong toys might be at the top of your list. Not only are they (almost) indestructible, but they’re also a great way to keep a busy dog busy.
Have you heard of Himalayan chews? These chews are made of hard cheese from cow and yak milk. You may be thinking that milk is not good for dogs and you are right, but once the milk goes through the process of becoming cheese, it is safe.
Hollowed beef bones are also a good choice. The great thing about them is that you can fill them with whatever your pup wants…and you can reuse them! They are a safe alternative because they really just lick whatever you stuff them with and don’t actually eat the bones.
Another chew that tops the list is bully sticks. It’s gross, but these chews are made from bull’s dick and dogs absolutely love them. Another reason why they are a great choice is because it’s just one ingredient which makes them perfect for puppies with fussy tummies.
There are so many amazing and safe chews out there so why settle for a bone?
