The BC SPCA works with the Upper Room Mission to provide food for pet owners who may not be able to afford it.
Diane Waters, BC SPCA outreach specialist said the Vernon Mission is the latest of 149 groups the BC SPCA works with across the province.
“We’re able to give them a little pet food on a regular basis,” he said. “This is to support walk-in clients.”
“We will now have accessible pet food and other pets for any community member who needs some support in keeping their furry friends healthy and well fed,” said a post on the URM Facebook page. .
Since the Vernon SPCA closed last year, Waters said working with URM is a way to help area residents and maintain a presence in the city.
“We’ve also partnered with the Lumby Food Bank, the Enderby Food Bank, we’re also providing food to the Armstrong Food Bank and we’re looking forward to talking to (Vernon’s) Turning Points,” he said.
Waters said the BC SPCA is also working with animal control officers in Penticton “so they have supplies they can take to people who may need them.”
The BC SPCA has also hired a Vernon service community co-ordinator.
The co-ordinator manages the pet food bank and will serve as the liaison for stray and animal intake as well as manage volunteer services in the area and conduct community outreach and support programs.
