THANE: Two people have been detained by the city police after a video of a dog being subjected to a merciless beating by an attendant at a local grooming pet shop, sparked widespread outrage.
Those detained have been identified as Mayur Adhav, 19 and Prashant Gaikwad, 20, residents of Vashind, police said.
A viral video capturing the disturbing action has gone viral on social media, triggering swift action from animal activists.
Nilesh Bhange, from the organization PAWS, and hundreds of animal lovers raised concerns and immediately contacted the authorities, prompting the Chitalsar police to intervene.
The dog in the video is a chow chow called Tofu and is about two years old, the activist said.
Bhange said, “the video seems to be a week old and it came into the public domain only after one of the accused shared it on his snapchat status. Some animal activists saw it and then it went viral on animal activist’s social media that triggered outrage.”
“We found out that the owner of the dog was on vacation and they kept it in a nearby kennel. The authorities took it to the kennel at the grooming center where it was subjected to the attack. Even the owners were shocked by the treatment done to the dog,” said Bhange.
On the other hand, Kshama Shirodkar, the veterinary officer of Thane Municipal Corporation has registered a Non-cognizable offense with the police.
A senior police official said, “We have registered an NC and further investigation is underway. It is not very clear why the dog was subjected to such cruelty. Things will become clear as the investigation continues.”
As the video went viral, animal activists started flocking to the grooming center and some of them even assaulted the two assistants of the grooming center. The police had to intervene and enforce a temporary closure of the establishment in an attempt to control the situation.
It was learned that the grooming center suspended the services of two assistants.
Bhange further added that the video was made possibly to show their power on social media and make it viral, the police will find out more during the investigation. “We want a cognizable offense to be registered against the duo.”
NC was registered at Chitalsar police station under section 11 (1) (cruelty to animals) of The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals Act, 1960.
