Hi, I’m Dr. Lauren! Read my introduction to learn more about me and my two adventurous cats, Pancake and Tiller.
Most cats like catnip, or valerian root. Or fur toys. Or something cat-like.
But leave it to Tiller to have a unique character.
I only know, because I have recently been forced to drink several daily cups of tea, due to the strange lack of summer weather, and an attempt to stave off the cold. Since I prefer iced black tea, and with lemon, I had to find a substitute. Enter: green tea. Others said it tastes like grass, but grass is healthy, right?
So, I didn’t expect it when Tiller suddenly took an interest in me one night while I was sitting on the couch, I was excited for some hugs, and maybe even some lap time.
How wrong was I?
Instead, he walked over to my teacup, and gently, deliberately, stuck his foot in it. Then it was pulled out. And drank tea from his foot. Repeatedly. I thought it was a fluke. But every time since then, if a cup of green tea has come out, so has Tiller. At what end?
Green tea, I’m curious, what if it attracts cats?
Perhaps green tea is similar in some ways to catnip. I couldn’t find any scientific research to support this, and certainly some suggest that the caffeine in green tea is not ideal for cats. Or maybe green tea tastes good on the Tiller. After all, cats, like people, have individual taste preferences. Many of my feline patients refuse tuna but love chicken treats, and vice versa.
In the end, I’ll probably never know why Tiller loves a cup of tea so much. Maybe deep down, he’s part British Shorthair? Or maybe I just chalked it up to his personality… a cat.
