Dr. Rebecca Cunningham is the third of three finalists to visit UMD as the regents face the statewide presidential decision.
UMD had the opportunity to recognize the final three finalists for the University’s top statewide job.
Answered by Dr. Rebecca Cunningham asked questions and spoke at a campus forum. He is currently the University of Michigan’s Vice President of Research and Innovation. Cunningham is a longtime faculty member in the school of Public Health and Medicine, after completing his residency in emergency medicine.
He was impressed on his campus tour but he’s also no stranger to the area. He and his family have been to the Boundary Waters many times.
He said UMD has a unique role and potential.
“I can see right away here what a great campus it is, and how it’s different in providing an education that’s different from many other colleges and regions in the area,” Cunningham said.
“And I want to work together to help strengthen those assets. And really help make clear to the chancellors’ partnership, and the system’s partnership as a whole, what the importance of having a university poised on the edge of the Great Lakes , which serves this comprehensive way to serve this region,” Cunningham said.
Cunningham said her late father-in-law was on the Twin Cities faculty for forty years. He said it led to many visits to Minnesota over the decades, including the best smoked fish ever–in Duluth.
Visited by Dr. Cunningham in Rochester and the Twin Cities on Friday. The other two finalists were at UMD last week.
Monday, the regents are set to decide who will be the next President of the University of Minnesota.
