While we are thankful that the shelter dogs are off the streets and out of harm’s way, it breaks our hearts to know that they are stuck in a kennel waiting for a new home. Some dogs, like the one in this story, spend months or even years behind shelter walls. One dog, known as ‘Yas Queen’, has spent more than 200 days waiting for a forever family, leaving shelter staff baffled. He is a happy dog with a winning smile. Despite his backstory, he doesn’t hold grudges and loves people.

Yas Queen was left in a New York City apartment after her landlord evicted her. Instead of taking him in or rehoming him, he left him to die without food or water. Fortunately, he was found and the authorities intervened. He was taken to Animal Care Shelters NYC (ACC) where he still remains.

On Yas Queen’s adoption page, ACC, a staff member wrote: “Yas Girl is a beautiful brown girl with perky ears who tilted her head as I spoke to her. She has made strides to gain confidence in the shelter with us and it is a joy to see her blossom into a friendly and playful girl. He likes to play with toys and pets.”
One volunteer said, “We’ve been appreciating this extraordinary woman for a long time—it’s great that people keep overlooking her!” Another staff member added, “He’s my favorite!” It is obvious that Yas Queen has paid her dues and is ready for her forever home.
