Each year 6.3 million pets enter US shelters, which is an average of 17,260 per day, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The number of dogs and cats taken in by pet shelters reached 46,807 in January 2023, an increase of 1,744 compared to January 2022, the 24Pet ‘Shelter Watch Report’ found.
Approximately 920,000 surrendered animals are euthanized each year. Shelters work to reduce euthanasia rates by promoting adoption campaigns, spaying and neutering programs, and behavioral rehabilitation.
A November 2019 study published in Animals noted that shelters “typically check for food-related guarding during behavioral tests” and some “euthanize dogs that aggressively guard food, while others restrict adoptions.”
The study, which examined the adoption success of shelter dogs deemed “resource guardians,” found that resource guardianship was more common among adults and seniors than among youths. , also more common in small and large dogs than in medium-sized dogs.
