Here are five ways to lower your pet care costs if you spend more than $1,200 a year.
Take a Proactive Approach

Reduce Veterinary Costs
Veterinarian prices vary widely, and you can save money by shopping around and seeing what different vets charge for different services. Another way to save money is to take your pet to a veterinary school — Veterinary schools are usually cheaper than animal clinics and hospitals. Students perform the procedures, but are supervised by a licensed professional.
Ask for Help From a Charity
If you can’t afford your pet’s medical bills, you may be able to get help from a national or local charity. A blog from Best Friends Animal Society lists resources for pet owners who need help with vet bills. National programs include The Pet Fund and Red Rover. For assistance with pet food and other expenses, contact your local Humane Society of America office.
Shop Repair Services
A basic dog grooming can cost anywhere from $30 to $90, according to The Academy of Pet Careers. Some breeds may be more expensive than others or require more frequent grooming. Your location and the qualifications of the groomer can also affect the cost. As with veterinary care, you can save money by comparing different grooming services and finding the ones that best fit your budget.
Pet Insurance
Pet insurance can help you save money when you file successful claims over expensive vet bills. Just be sure to compare insurance companies, choose the right coverage and ask for discounts to lower your insurance costs.
