GEORGETOWN, Ky. (LEX 18) — Two dogs are recovering after Scott County Animal Care and Control says they found them in a cage on the side of the road. Animal control is asking anyone who lives near the intersection of Crumbaugh Road and Lemons Mill Road to check their cameras to see if they can find any clues about who abandoned the dogs Tuesday night.
Nathan Mullikin is the assistant director for Scott County Animal Care and Control. He was called at midnight for a report of a kennel on the side of Crumbaugh Road.
“I hate to be so blunt, but it really pisses you off. It really does,” Mullikin said.
He said he found the two dogs inside a kennel, where they were thrown.
“It seems obvious that they are not well taken care of. Their nails are long. They are thin. They are covered in dirt and urine,” he said.
“They were scared. Even when we got back here, it took them a little bit of a night to decompress a little bit, but I think once they knew they had a warm place to stay and food and water, I think they stayed overnight ,” added Mulkin.
Shelter workers cleaned the two puppies and gave them plenty of food.
“They’re like good animals. They just need a little time and someone to love them,” Mullikin said.
The dogs are at the shelter on a five-day hold, in case someone comes. However, apart from that, they will be available for use from Monday.
Mullikin said they are looking into several leads and asking for tips from anyone who may know how these two dogs ended up on the side of the road in that kennel. She said abandoning an animal is classified as second-degree animal cruelty in Kentucky.
“There are so many resources now; there’s no reason to abandon an animal like that or abuse an animal. If you can’t take care of it, contact your local animal control agency, reach out to your local humane society. The today, there are so many rescues and places, people willing to help,” Mullikin said.
