A few months ago, an animal shelter in San Diego received a call from Drew Smith, a 41-year-old engineer, who was looking for a dog to adopt. Unfortunately, she couldn’t find the dog she was looking for and ended up adopting Carl, a weak 4-year-old Spaniel mix, somewhat reluctantly. When Drew comes home from work, he finds Carl in the backyard in a frenzy and constantly barking. Although he is a relatively quiet dog, Drew was awakened from his nap one night by Carl’s insistent and painful growling, which was usually very “quiet” included.
At first, she removed the barks because they seemed strange, but then she remembered that Carl had been acting strange all day. He quickly turned on the lights in an alarming state to discover smoke billowing from the walls.

Drew manages to grab Carl in his arms and flee his apartment before the bark alarm starts to erupt in flames from all sides. Drew made another amazing discovery! The fire is burning”on the walls” within days, it appeared.
Throughout the week, Carl had been suffering from headaches and sore throats, but he did not connect them to secondhand smoke inhalation.

Drew revealed that he did not want to adopt Carl because of the prospect of medical expenses related to his dental problems. But after witnessing Carl’s brave actions, Drew now believes that nothing is more important than a dog’s devotion and loyalty. He knows he’s in good company because he has a great relationship with his fellow rescue!
