ROCHESTER, NY — Friday is the first Friday of Lent, a time of spiritual celebration for Christians and Catholics before Easter. Celebrants head for a local fish fry, as it is tradition not to eat red meat on Fridays during Lent.
News10NBC wanted to see how people in our community celebrate, so we stopped by Charlie Riedel’s Restaurant in Webster. The crew talked to the general manager, and they said that even though the snow was a bit painful, they were preparing for a big dinner on Friday night.
Last year, Charlie’s was voted the second best fish fry in Rochester, and they’re proud of it.
During Lent, Charlie experienced an almost 30% increase in orders. So we asked some of the customers while waiting for their dinner, what fish fry means to them.
“Well, it’s just a religious experience and I understand that on Fridays you don’t eat meat,” said customer Wendy Goff. “And I like the fish fries here. I’ve lived in other states that don’t have fish fries and I’m glad to come back to New York for this.”
