CASCADE, Idaho — The 6th annual What the Fish ice fishing tournament was held this weekend on Warm Lake where anglers competed to see who could catch the biggest fish, the smallest fish and the most fish.
“We’re just having fun ice fishing,” Oakley Young said. “It’s beautiful, I love it and I can’t believe we’re here.”
Oakley went out fishing with his grandfather and friends as they hauled all their gear out by snowmobile. The ice on Warm Lake is 14 inches thick and anglers are trying to land trout and kokanee.
“In the tournament I’ve caught pretty good the smallest fish so far, Oakley said. “I’ve really only fished anything but bull trout because you can’t keep those.”
The North Shore Lodge is putting together this contest that features cash prizes, a raffle with items like two pistols, and augers and other fishing gear. Half of the money raised is donated to St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital.
It hasn’t been the best winter for owners as the lack of snow forced cancellations from snowmobile search crews earlier in the winter. However, they were able to host the Idaho Sled Dog Challenge in January.
While winter can be hit or miss, this lodge is booked all summer and is a welcome spot miles from civilization with food and drink. The cheeseburger I had was pretty good.
The owners told me they’re excited about holding the ice because more than anything they want this tournament to get kids outside so they can love fishing.
“I like the thrill of having a fish bite on a hook and just reeling it in,” Oakley said. “I love the adrenaline, I love everything about it.”
It seems to have worked for Oakley and his friends. The tournament costs $20 to compete in if you’re interested in trying your luck next year.
