New Cleveland Browns quarterback Jameis Winston may have a career in broadcasting waiting for him after he’s done with the NFL.
Winston went viral over the weekend for a video that showed him on a boat interviewing a fish.
“If you’re wondering—I asked the question too—why do fish flash when they’re out of water? They’re just trying to swim away,” Winston said before turning the mic on the fish. “How does air swimming work? They don’t really have an answer. Sometimes, no response is the best response.”
Winston may have an issue with reporting accuracy. While talking about a fish he caught, he called it an amphibian and also got it wrong. However, Winston is pure comedy on the mic and should keep to himself.
The Browns signed Winston this offseason to backup Deshaun Watson. The former No. 1 overall pick has passed for 22,104 yards, 141 touchdowns and 99 interceptions in his career. He had a 34-46 record as a starter and made the Pro Bowl in 2015 as a rookie.
Cleveland chose Winston over Joe Flacco, who had a 4-1 record with the Browns in the regular season finale. The 39-year-old Flacco landed with the Indianapolis Colts.
Browns Enjoy Jameis Winston’s Contributions
The Browns reported for voluntary offseason workouts on April 15. Winston made his impact felt, much to the delight of head coach Kevin Stefanski.
“I think when you spend time with Jameis, you definitely get a sense of the kind of energy he brings,” Stefanski said Tuesday, April 16. “A very positive energy, whether it’s in the building, in the weight room, in the hallway, in the meeting rooms. He’s a guy who constantly wants to know what we’re doing from a playbook standpoint. He’s early here, he’s really impressed with what he’s going to bring Jameis on this football team.”
Winston is expected to get a lot of work this offseason as Watson continues his recovery from shoulder surgery.
As Stefanski noted, Winston is a great presence in the locker-room. Winston said he looks forward to working with Watson and building a relationship.
“The most important thing I believe is that the relationship between me and Deshaun will continue to grow and flourish,” Winston said in his opening press conference. “I look forward to allowing him to lean on me for anything he needs and also encouraging him and giving him different resources that he probably wouldn’t have gotten from the people he was in the same room with.”
Deshaun Watson Is Happy To Be Jameis Winston’s Backup
The Browns faced a decision this offseason when deciding on the backup quarterback spot. The nod ultimately went to Winston and not Flacco, who the Browns said they were interested in bringing back. Watson was pleased with the direction the tram had taken.
“James is a great guy, a great guy, a better guy than anything he does outside of himself,” Watson said of Winston on April 8. “Football is secondary. But the being around him, his company, his leadership, his command to be so positive.”
The Browns also added former Baltimore Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley to the mix. He joins second-year QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson on the depth chart. Thompson-Robinson is still working his way back from a hip injury that ended his rookie season early.
