The dog was rescued from rural Gaston County after the video went viral
The footage that drew attention to the dog showed him walking aimlessly in his yard, among the birds, with his fur seemingly in a disheveled state. When notified, animal control officers visited the property on Saturday, Feb. 17. They, along with a community partner, provided immediate assistance to the dog in the form of a new dog house, comfortable bed, and a fresh water, as according to a news release, WSOC-TV reported.
Named Bentley, the dog was discovered to have a potentially infected wound on his neck, prompting officers to escort Bentley and the owner to an emergency vet visit. The following day, Bentley underwent a comprehensive veterinary examination at a full-service clinic. The procedure includes sedation, thorough manipulation, and treatment for the neck wound. Additionally, Bentley was given an antibiotic injection and scheduled for a follow-up visit in two weeks.
Meanwhile, Bentley is placed under the care of a local resident, which marks a positive change in his once sad situation. His former owner is now cooperating with animal authorities. The case took a more significant turn Tuesday when Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement, in cooperation with the Gaston County District Attorney’s Office, filed criminal charges against Bentley’s owner.
23-year-old Carl Lee Poston was charged with two misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty. Following his arrest, Poston was granted a $10,000 unsecured bond, according to jail records.
