One rainy day in Selma, California, a young teenager named Ubaldo heard a scratching at his door. Curious, he went to see what it was and discovered a small puppy seeking shelter from the rain on his porch. Wanting to help the lost puppy, he tried to take it inside, but his parents wouldn’t let him. However, Ubaldo’s compassion drives him to take care of the trembling puppy. He quickly grabbed his own dog’s food to feed him. “At first, he backed off a little bit, but I kept getting closer to him, and once I took care of him, he trusted me,” Ubaldo told The Dodo in the video below.
He doesn’t know where the puppy came from, but as a dog lover, he is determined to help it. The puppy was still wearing a pink collar, leading Ubaldo to believe that he was lost and that his owners might be looking for him. She joined local community Facebook groups and posted about the missing dog, hoping to reach its owner.
While waiting for a response, Ubaldo made sure the puppy was well fed and clean. She asked her parents if the puppy could stay with them, but they said no, because they already had a dog named Rocky, and their landlord only allowed one pet.
“My brother and I hung out with him on the balcony in the afternoon, and then we played with him […] I was worried about him being out in the cold at night, so I made a little house for him out of an old cardboard box. But I couldn’t help but think about him at night, so I just let him in while my parents were sleeping,” Ubaldo shared.
He quietly took her to the bathroom, where he played with her and tried to calm her down. He even made a makeshift sweater for her out of an old sock. “I am becoming attached to him. I wanted to keep him, but I know the right thing to do is return him to his owners,” Ubaldo said.
Eventually, his parents found out, but it didn’t matter because the next day, Ubaldo received a message from the possible owner. “I received a potential request from the owner and after some light social media stalking and going through his house, his story was verified,” explained Ubaldo.
The owner lives near Selma, CA, not far from Ubaldo’s home. They met that same day so he could get the dog back. “Before I took him back, I played with him one last time in the yard with the tennis ball he likes to play with, and I enjoyed the time with him. He was a lot of fun to be around. She was very spunky and adorable,” Ubaldo recalled.
Finally, it’s time to return the dog to his home. The owner’s daughter came out and told him the dog’s name was Bubba. After Ubaldo’s efforts, Bubba returned to his place.
