This afternoon and evening we checked out the Llanreath/Llanstadwell gull roost again. At this moment I stayed at Llanreath and Annie went to Pennar Gut, to see what, if any, movements there were of the gulls in the Pembroke River.
For a few hours observing the surroundings 1,000 Herring Gulls (in small flocks) and some LBB and Common Gulls gradually made their way from Pembroke Dock to Milford Haven, while some headed further west over Pennar Gut, possibly on to the islands? About 500 BH Gulls also migrated to the Haven but, unlike last week, none to Pembroke River, although a few mixed gulls flew down the Pembroke River and out of the Gut into the Haven. This is in stark contrast to the situation last week.
Around 2,250-2,500 Black-headed Gulls later began to settle on the Milford Haven Waterway between Llanreath and Llanstadwell. Initially there were two distinct flocks, one of about 700 who first settled near the shores of Llanstadwell and another of about 1,500 closer to Llanreath. Eventually the birds on the Llanreath side gradually began to move to the north side of the channel as it was too dark to see much activity.
A very small part of the BH Gull flock migrating from the Port of Pembroke to live in the Milford Haven Waterway |
Although almost all are BHG, 7 Common Gulls and 3 Mediterranean Gulls is selected from herd as before gathering at sea.
Annie, in Pennar, has great views 3 Great Northern Divers relaxing on the Pembroke River and watching 5 Cow Man flew out of Pennar Gut at dusk. Including a small wader roost on the rocky shore at Llanreath c.90 Oystercatchers and 40+ Dunlin. A herd of c.50 Pied Wagtails left the Port of Pembroke area just after 17:00 hrs, down the channel to Valero, probably on a roost there.
Nice to see 3 GN Divers close together and in good light |
