If you’re looking for a classic pattern that catches fish all over the world, you’ll want to pay attention to this one! Today looking at the Classic Zonker pattern, tied by Steve Cullen. The Zonker is a pattern created in the 1970’s by an American fly angler named, Dan Byford Zonker! His vision for this pattern, was to create a fly that imitated a small baitfish.
In the 80’s and 90’s this fly caught a lot of fish in the UK, but over time, the materials changed slightly, replacing the original Rabbit Zonker strip, for Mink. However, today, Steve uses original materials and uses Rabbit!
Few materials are needed to create this amazing fly pattern and the Zonker is pretty special considering it catches fish literally and has for decades. A simple, straight forward pattern that will deliver results. Have some of these ties ready for your next day!
All the materials needed to tie this fly are available from Glasgow Angling Center as listed below, but as always, if you need any help finding materials or replacements, we’d be happy to help.
