Today we review a fly with a reputation, Steve Cullen’s Popperfry. Steve actually developed this pattern just over a decade ago and it has given him great results in competitions and fishing. So let’s see what makes it so special!
Starting with the hook, a size 10 Wet fly hook, simple, but then a booby eye cut in half at a 45degree angle is placed on top of the hook giving a buoyant tip. The body is made up of two materials, a Straggle strip in Olive and a Squirrel strip, folded back on itself to create a nice “fin”. To give it a fishier look, a set of orange eyes are attached to the fly, however, Steve points out that these eyes are made of vinyl construction which is no longer visible!
To hide all those threads towards the head of the fly, a dubbing is used to cover and protect those threads and that’s what creates the Popperfry! A great pattern and from Steve’s experience, a fly that won’t fail!
All the materials needed to tie this fly are available from Glasgow Angling Center as listed below, but as always, if you need any help finding materials or replacements, we’d be happy to help.
