Barb Smith, president of FISH of Grand Blanc, was surprised to receive a check for $10,000 from Kroger to help feed the food insecure population in the area. The donation, and a $225,000 donation to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, took place on Tuesday, February 27, at the Kroger store in Grand Blanc. “Oh, my,” Smith said. “I wasn’t ready for it, but it was such a blessing.” Smith said FISH serves more people and volunteers worry the non-profit organization will have to dip into its reserves to meet the demand. However, thanks to Kroger and the community, the hungry will continue to be able to eat FISH. “Whenever I needed something, God answered my prayers,” Smith said. Bill Layman, store manager, and Shaun Stewart, district manager, presented the check and pledged to promote a “zero waste, zero hunger” culture. Kroger will host a food drive for FISH on March 16.
