My name is Kyle Baker, and I’m a writer and editor at Catster.com. I’ll share amazing jokes about life on my little farm with my two cat brothers; Jack and Girlie. Now, I call them my cat, but of course, my two daughters claim full rights to both!
Both Jack and Girlie are getting older, turning 10 this year. In fact, my younger daughter, who is 11, has known them most of her life. We got them as sibling kittens in need of a home.
I never planned on getting a cat—I’ll admit, I’ve been more of a dog person my whole life. But my husband and I agreed that raising our girls with both dogs and cats would be a wonderful experience for them. Well, I’m glad we made that decision, because I’m a firm cat lover now, and so are my kids. In fact, the name Jack and Girlie came from my oldest daughter.
My cats tend to spend most of their time indoors, but they have free access to the outdoors and have a safe environment to explore.
Now that you’re a little familiar with my story, let me introduce you to the stars of the show!
Jack
Jack, or “Jackal” as he is more commonly referred to by my girls, is the fluffier, larger, and more reserved of the two brothers. When I say reserved, I mean he’s not exactly happy to cuddle on my lap, or anywhere near me, really. Jack likes his space, and since he’s a kitten, he prefers to sleep on his own terms. Don’t get me wrong, he’s happy to get all the petting he can get and will meow and pounce on your legs until he gets it—just don’t expect him to cuddle.
Jack is a homebody and doesn’t spend much time outside, certainly not as much as his sister. He likes his comfort and prefers to stick close to his food bowl! My dogs keep trying to make friends with Jack, but he’s having none of it. My littlest dog, Charlie, still tries hard despite lots of nose swipes!
Girlie
Girlie, or “Whirlabee” to my daughters, is the more loving of the two. He would take any chance he could to sit on our lap and snore and take turns sleeping next to my daughters at night. He’s also more of an explorer than Jack, and I often see him exploring a little further from home, even sometimes joining us and the dogs.
Girlie has always been a hunter and takes care of any mice in our home—much to the dismay of my daughters. This became a real problem at one stage when he started hunting birds, but luckily we were able to curb the behavior quickly.
Now that he’s older, he’s stopped hunting altogether but still likes to explore the yard and climb trees. Girlie seems to love being outside, but at night she will come inside and find her daily dose of snuggling.
Girlie and Jack race
Girlie and Jack are both “moggies”, or mixed-breed cats. Unfortunately, I don’t have any information on their parents, but considering they are siblings, they look quite different. Jack is softer and has a silky, deep black and gray coat complete with a gorgeous fluffy tail. Girlie is more orange and brown, with a short smooth coat, and is smaller and lighter than her sister.
I’m excited to share more about these two amazing cats, and the adventures they have every week!
