A VET expert has revealed FOUR dog toys you shouldn’t buy – they’ll cost you £1,000 and could kill your pup.
These items may seem attractive to pet owners, but they can be deadly – don’t get caught.
BONES
Brain bones are probably one of the first things that come to mind when describing a dog toy.
These long-lasting chewy treats are cheap and easy to get.
However, it’s important to do one important thing before giving it to your dog, say the experts at River Road Veterinary Clinic.
Be sure to remove the fatty marrow from the center of the bone, as this substance can cause pancreatitis in some dogs.
They should also be given to your puppy raw as cooking seeds and cause them to fall apart when chewed on.
The third rule of thumb when buying this teeth cleaning snack – always choose one that is longer than the dog’s muzzle.
This will prevent bone from intruding behind their lower teeth – which often requires surgical intervention.
GEM BALLS
Experts also warn against giving your canine companion rubber balls.
Besides being a choking hazard, these toys can get stuck in the dog’s mouth if there is only one hole.
With a hole there is nowhere to release the pressure, and if it remains attached for a long time, it can cause irreversible tissue damage.
Another vet told the story of the time he had to perform life-saving surgery on an 11-month-old puppy after he sucked up two rubber balls and swallowed them.
SMALL OR DAMAGED TOYS
It may seem simple, but many owners buy toys that are small enough to swallow.
Other accidents can happen if an existing toy chews and your dog chokes on one of the fragments.
Some people may have other animals at home, such as a cat, and their puppy may choose their toy instead.
If any of these items are swallowed they can become lodged in the intestine and require emergency surgery.
This can cost thousands of pounds in vet bills.
RAWHIDE
Another type of bone, rawhide, can also cause serious problems.
If your four-legged friend breaks off fragments and swallows them, it can result in intestinal issues.
Bone marrow increases in size after being ingested and surgery is again one of the only ways to remove the blockage.
It is important to keep an eye on your dog while they are enjoying a raw bone.
It comes as other vets have issued additional warnings to keep your dog safe.
Dr Hunter Finn took to TikTok to reveal the little signs that could mean your dog needs an emergency spinal cord assessment.
Another vet also raised the alarm about five foods you should never give your pet because some can be fatal.
Raisins, onions and garlic are just some of the examples given by the vet and he even stated that dried grapes can cause kidney failure in dogs.
Another expert revealed the reason why you need to keep common bathroom items away from your dog.
