Today we are looking at a fry pattern, called the Pinfry Jig tied by Steve Cullen. The story of this fly comes from when Steve’s friend was fishing for Grayling. He saw one coming in and out from the river bank and he threw a black Nymph at him. The Grayling took the fly and as soon as it landed, it started regurgitating small fry, prompting the need for this pattern to be made.
There are many benefits to using a jig style fly. One of the advantages of this style is that the hook rises high, allowing the fly to be dragged/jigged along the bottom in a drifting or “Swimming” position. Because of this “swimming” position. This provides a better set of hooks for when a fish strikes.
Another benefit that adds to how fun these flies are, is that it gives a better feel of the fly itself. Fished with a tight line or a Euro nymph setup, it can provide better feedback from every little bump or tug you feel on the line.
All the materials needed to tie this fly are available from Glasgow Angling Center as listed below, but as always, if you need any help finding materials or replacements, we’d be happy to help.
