If you want a new pattern for catching those Trout fries, this is the one for you. Today we look at a variant of a Pike fly called the Flashtail Whistler, tied by Steve Cullen.
This fly is essentially a condensed Pike fly intended for targeting Trout and according to Steve, this fly works very well on reservoirs during the Winter.
This is a relatively simple fly to tie that uses only a few materials, but in good quantity to form the head and body of the fly. Steve points out that if you want this fly to sink deep add a tungsten bead or heavier eyes to get a faster sinking rate.
Since this is a variant of a pike fly, there are different color schemes you can use if Orange/Yellow and Flashtail aren’t to your liking! Cat’s Whiskers or Viva variants, can be red white and silver to suit your needs. Tie a few of these together and catch a trout fry!
All the materials needed to tie this fly are available from Glasgow Angling Center as listed below, but as always, if you need any help finding materials or replacements, we’d be happy to help.
