Today we are looking at Steve Cullen’s Cow Dung Dry Fly. This fly is a good imitation of an orange/yellow terrestrial Dung Fly (Scatophagidae) which is abundant in waters around the country where there are cattle grazing nearby you will see them humming are cattle pats. Natural ones are often blown in the water and Trout love them!
Steve uses a cowled wing of Tan Dry Yarn the same length as the fly, lightly draped over the scuffed up thorax which also adds to the buoyancy of the fly which is perfect for spotting takes and keeps it fishing longer.
He also uses a combination of colors to match the hatch and adding a bit of sparkle makes it a surprisingly effective pattern in the summer and fall when the flies are buzzing around. Tied to a size 12 but just as effective in other sizes to suit the conditions, if you fish mountain water or anywhere near pastures this is one to have in your box.
All the materials needed to tie this fly are available from Glasgow Angling Center as listed below, but as always, if you need any help finding materials or replacements, we’d be happy to help.
