Grand Lake
Lake travel conditions have improved for the most part, though you’ll still see some deep snow and slush spots. The bite is slow for rainbow and brown trout. We are finding some success in shallow water, under 8 feet, at first and last light with Clam Jointed Pinhead spoons in white and pink, tipped with a wax worm.
Lake trout action has been fair with the best action in the 65-90 foot range with brightly colored chartreuse, pink, and glow tubes or grubs, tipped with a small piece of fresh sucker meat or a salmon egg on the bottom. We’ve also had some success with flutter spoons and jigging raps in blue/silver, and chasing the suspended fish we see in the upper part of the water column.
Williams Fork Reservoir
Travel to the lake has been made difficult by the recent snow and slush across the lake. Bring good waterproof shoes and a travel light, you’ll be working hard on the tour. The bite for rainbow trout is slow. Lake trout action has been fair with the best action for fish in the 15-18 inch range.
Lake Granby
Traveling conditions were as you would expect for this time of year and the amount of snow we received. There are some large areas with deep snow and slush, while other areas near the most popular access points are rough and frozen. We’re looking for muddier and deeper snow the more east you travel on the lake. Be prepared in case you get out and we highly recommend waterproof boots.
Rainbow trout and brown trout action has been fair with the best action along the dam faces in the early morning, a small Cleo spoon or a tungsten tipped with a minnow head or wax worm has been going on the baits . Trout action on the lake has been slow to fair depending on the day, which is very normal for our mid-ice conditions.
Finding groups of fish willing to bite has been key. For many spots, mark fish that are curious but won’t bite, stay mobile until you spot feeding fish. Look for active fish in 50-85 feet of water. The P&D Lure Co. 3-inch grubs in chartreuse or purple with a sucker tip continue to produce most days.
We’re also starting to see the suspended spoon bite pop up, so tie on a Clam Flutter spoon and have it ready to cast to the suspended fish that pass by when you mark them on your electronics.
