Social media is the perfect platform to showcase a pet’s personality, and one owner has done just that by sharing a video that highlights just how much of a diva some cats can be.
Sarah-Jayne Kerr put together an Instagram video of her fluffy friend Mao sitting on the floor waiting for something to eat. The on-screen text explains: “Our female cat refuses to eat from any bowl other than this crystal chalice.”
The next clip shows a close-up of an ornate wine glass found at a vintage market, followed by a rag doll at her dinner.
So far, the video, shared with @_sarahjayne on Instagram, has garnered 1.2 million views and more than 126,000 likes.
The caption refers to the cat as a “princess” but once upon a time cats were actually treated like royalty. Cats were worshiped by the ancient Egyptians, who worshiped them.
“The Egyptians believed that cats were magical creatures, capable of bringing good luck to the people who lived with them. To honor these beloved pets, wealthy families dressed them in jewelry and fed them of foods fit for royalty,” according to National Geographic.
Today, domestic cats are no longer placed on a pedestal by society, but they certainly are by their owners. Newsweek has shared many articles about cats being compared to spoiled children when they are told “no.”
Hill’s Pet Nutrition explains why cats believe they are in charge of their owners. The American pet food company says that cats will crave attention and are willing to do whatever it takes to get it (in most cases, not much). Hill’s website also notes how a cat will sit where it wants and when it wants. Cats also do not hesitate to leave hair on your clothes or disturb your work or reading time as long as they are comfortable.
Whether or not they choose what dishes they eat, the cat can dictate what and when they eat. Owners like Kerr certainly understand this and point out that cats are “known to be picky eaters.”
It turns out Kerr isn’t alone as other cat owners have commented on the clip to not only approve of the bowl but to share their cats’ needs.
One user said: “Our female cat: my food has to be exactly the right temperature, humidity and placed in exactly the right place in the dining room. Our boy cat: I’ll eat hot wet litter, yum!”
Another wrote: “Lol she looks expensive, let her keep up appearances.”
“She is a queen and only queens feast from the best dresses,” said a third comment.
Newsweek @_sarahjayne was contacted for comment and details of the case could not be verified.
