What are Italian Pizzelle Cookies?
From Italy, Italian pizzelle cookies are thin, crispy, sweet, and waffle-like treats. These pizzelle cookies are usually made with a batter of flour, eggs, sugar, and butter, often flavored with anise or vanilla. Then, the batter is poured into a special pizzelle iron that applies a decorative snowflake pattern to the cookies as they bake.
Can Dogs Eat Italian Pizzelle Cookies?
It is not recommended to share Italian pizzelle cookies with dogs because the licorice-like flavor, which comes from an ingredient called anise, along with butter and sugar, can upset their stomachs.

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups oat flour from Bark Bistro Awesome Apple Pooch Pancakes
1 cup blended apples
1 large egg
coconut oil
What’s different about this recipe is that I used a dog-safe pancake mix from Bark Bistro Awesome Apple Pooch Pancakes. The mix consists of oat flour, apple, cinnamon, and vanilla.
Variations in the Use of Other Substances
flour – In addition to oat flour, you have the option of using alternative flours such as whole wheat, chickpea, coconut, and brown rice.
Fruits – Substituting bananas for apples is a great alternative.
Other ingredients – Enhance the taste by including peanut butter in the recipe. This will add a super delicious taste that your dog will love. For your dog’s safety, make sure the peanut butter is 100% made from peanuts and does not contain xylitol.
Direction:
1. In a bowl mix well the flour, apple mixture, and egg.
2. Pour a spoonful of batter into the pizzelle maker and close.
3. Bake according to the pizzelle maker’s instructions or until they are golden brown, usually 30 seconds to 1 minute. Use a nonstick spatula to transfer the pizzelles to a cooling rack. Repeat with the rest of the batter.
This recipe makes about 12 pizzelle cookies
Preparation Tips
Pizzelle Maker
It’s important to preheat the Pizzelle Maker and apply a little cooking spray at the beginning and throughout cooking only if necessary (which is usually unnecessary). I chose to use coconut oil spray.
Mixed Apples
Dice a medium-sized apple into small pieces, then blend it in a blender with 1/4 cup of water.
Pizzelle Batter
Make sure the batter is thick enough to drip slowly from the spoon instead of draining quickly.
How Do You Store Pizzelles To Stay Crispy?
To keep pizzelle cookies crisp, let them cool completely before storing or stacking. It’s best to wrap them in aluminum foil, but you can also use the containers once they’ve cooled.
