Recently, the team at Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL) came across a sickening scene while driving through the busy streets of Missouri. A dog was found abandoned, lying in the middle of a pile of garbage near an overflowing dumpster. At first glance, it is clear that his situation is dire. Trapped and unable to move, the puppy has no choice but to curl up in a pile of garbage, waiting for someone to rescue him. Fortunately, help arrived.
Determined to free the frightened dog, the rescuers cautiously approached. But the frightened girl, later named Snapple, is defensive and hesitant to trust them. His first reaction was one of fear, and he played along, but the team was patient.
Donna Lochmann, SRSL’s Chief Life-Saving Officer, opened a can of Vienna sausages, offering small bites of Snapple to encourage him to trust them. Gradually, the pup lets his guard down, eventually allowing the team to have a leash around his neck. After carefully cutting him from the tangled cable, they finally got him to safety.
Once he realized he was truly free, Snapple’s demeanor changed. Although still cautious, he followed his rescuers in their car and was taken straight to the SRSL shelter. There, he took a deep shower to wash off the dirt from his ordeal, followed by a full medical examination. Thankfully, Snapple has been given a clean bill of health, but the emotional scars from his abandonment will take longer to heal.
“He’s been through a lot and still doesn’t trust us,” SRSL wrote on Facebook. “Our amazing team is working with her to show her that she will never be hurt, dumped, sidelined or abandoned again.”
Since his rescue, Snapple has started to blossom at the shelter. Although he is still cautious, his personality gradually shines as he learns that he is finally safe. Snapple is now available for adoption, but SRSL is committed to giving him all the time he needs to make a full recovery.
