Hi, I’m Christopher! Read my introduction to learn more about me and my silly Russian Blue cat, Olga.
In The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dr. Jekyll creates a potion that turns him into a murderous monster. Although he can be controlling at first when his alter ego appears, Mr. Hyde. I never associated my pets with Robert Louis Stevenson’s Victorian thrillers until I adopted Olga.
Like plum sauce, he is a mixture of sweet and sour, and he can instantly switch from one to the other. It doesn’t happen all the time. Sometimes, he’s kind even if it’s irritating. Depending on their personality, cats will bite you if you take care of them for too long, and others will attack if they are overstimulated while playing, but Olga’s behavior is different.
Sneak Attacks
Out of the blue, he would attack my hand when it was on the armrest of my recliner, and when I said “No” or yelled something rude, he would back away for a moment but then rest his head on my leg. After a playful or not so playful bite, some animals run and hide when you scream in pain, but Olga doesn’t seem to care.
He specializes in hiding when he wants to be alone, or someone is shooting, but he doesn’t hide when he thinks I’m upset. I don’t want to give you the impression that he hisses or screams when he becomes Hyde, but he is more aggressive and more likely to bite or scratch.
I’ve never been badly hurt by his attacks, and usually, I’m more surprised than angry when he shows up. However, she has come a long way since she was a kitten.
Mr. Hyde as a Kitten
Unlike Dr. Hyde in the 19th-century story, Olga had more trouble letting her “good” side take over when she was a kitten. She did not like to be picked up or stroked on her back and used her sharp teeth and small claws to repel my attempts. The only time I could hold her was when she was napping, and even then, I risked bloody hands in case she woke up.
Although he’s not the most affectionate kitty, he likes to sit near me when he’s not tearing up the house. At night, he sleeps on a chair in my room and only jumps on the bed every now and then to attack my feet under the covers.
Tolerant Cat Owners
It took about a year for his Jekyll side to become clearer, and I remember being happy that I spent less on hydrogen peroxide and bandages than when he was a kitten. Every cat misbehaves, but some owners don’t understand how close housecats are to feral cats. If they stay inside all day and cannot hunt and pounce on their prey, they need an alternative, which may include attacking humans.
Playing with toys and climbing cat trees can keep some cats busy, but a hand dangling from the couch or shivering paws under a blanket is too resistant to ignore sometimes. If you have a Jekyll, Hyde, or a combination, like Olga, try to be tolerant of your cat.
Their scratches and bites are painful, but when you consider that cats come from skilled predators, you should be proud that you can take care of a furry killer who loves you, even if they have a strange way of showing this.
