When was the last Stella & Chewy dog food recall?
In 2015, Stella & Chewy announced a voluntary recall of various dog food products. (via NBC News)
Since then, the Milwaukee-based pet food manufacturer has reportedly taken significant precautionary measures in their pet food safety processes to minimize potential issues.
Why did Stella & Chewy recall its dog food?
Stella & Chewy issued the recall after a routine test revealed the presence of Listeria Monocytogenes in the products.
Listeria is a type of bacteria that contaminates food and leads to a serious foodborne illness known as Listeriosis.
According to the FDA, dogs who develop Listeriosis show symptoms such as mild gastrointestinal upset, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, breathing problems, and muscle aches. A severe level of infection can lead to death.
Surprisingly, not all dogs infected with Listeria show symptoms. Instead, some dogs simply become carriers of Listeria. In this case, a puppy may appear healthy despite carrying the bacteria. However, they will shed the bacteria through their feces, increasing the risks of spreading the bacteria to humans.
In humans, Listeriosis leads to symptoms such as fever, persistent headache, nausea, and diarrhea. Unfortunately, vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems can succumb to Listeriosis.
