The Purina Pet Food plant in Denver, CO has received multiple fines over the years for “beyond foul air pollution laws“. The Purina plant recently received another “$7,000 penalty from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment”.
KDVR.com said in 2023: “The Nestlé Purina plant has been deemed one of the smelliest places in the Mile High City based on odor complaints reported to the Denver Department of Public Health and Environment.”
Purina signed an agreement with the city of Denver “to comply with regulations regarding odor emissions”however the plant appears to still emit foul air (and has for years). “In 2021, the City of Denver fined Purina $12,000 for repeatedly emitting noxious odors.”
This Purina plant was sued by neighbors because of the smell as well. “A group of residents filed a class-action lawsuit in US District Court in May alleging toxic fumes from the pet food plant are so bad that people living nearby should be compensated for their loss of property value and quality of life.“
Personal experience: I’ve been to Denver several times. When you travel from the airport to the city, you pass the Purina plant on the way. And I totally agree with the ‘stinky’ classification from the Denver Health Department and area residents…it is a BAD smell coming from that plant (noticed every time I travel to Denver ).
Wishing you and your pet(s) the best,
