With National Dog Day coming up on the last weekend of the dog days of summer, Autotrader has released its 2023 Best Cars for Dog Lovers list, highlighting the best cars for people with dogs
Before getting into the rundown of the 10 vehicles, Autotrader notes the general features that many of the options have that make it easy to transport one or more four-legged family members. Features that editors consider most important include:
Sturdy seats: Vinyl, leather, and faux leather are the preferred seating materials for dog lovers, thanks to their durability and easy cleaning.
Low cargo floor: A high cargo floor can scare even a large dog. The low floor makes the vehicle accessible to small dogs and those with mobility issues.
Rugged interior: Even the best-behaved dog can accidentally cause damage to delicate surfaces. A rough-and-ready interior can better stand up to dog claws (and slobber).
Accessories: Some manufacturers include dog accessories, such as pet screens, in their catalogs. The aftermarket also provides great harnesses, kennels, and other pet travel essentials. Some are general, some are model specific.
Cargo tie-down: Automotive pet accessories are more secure when using cargo tie-down hooks.
With those qualities in mind, the 2023 model-year vehicles that Autotrader says are “perfectly suited for dogs and their owners” are:
- Audi Q3
- Ford Bronco Sport
- Honda Pilot
- Hyundai area
- Jeep Grand Cherokee L
- Kia Soul
- Subaru Forester
- Tesla Model Y
- Toyota Sienna
- Volvo V60 Cross Country
