Norway’s seafood exports are continuing but there are signs things may be slowing down, according to the latest figures. Total export value last month was NOK 13.3bn (just short of £1bn), an increase of 3% on last year. Up to 5,000 mature salmon are feared to have escaped from the Lerøy facility in central Norway in recent days. Lerøy Midt said it had informed the authorities of the incident, which is believed to have occurred on Tuesday of this week. Harald Larsen, general manager of Lerøy Midt, said the company quickly recruited additional resources to try to repair the damage and recapture as many escaped fish as possible. Iceland’s Arctic Fish made an operational profit or EBIT of €3.2 million (£2.7m) in 2023, the first full year under Mowi’s ownership. This is despite serious escapement issues last summer that led to a backlash in Iceland against open pen salmon farming. The company said the financial biological performance improved somewhat after a very difficult third quarter when the escapes took place. The harvest volume in the fourth quarter was 2,529 tons gutted weight in the fourth quarter. The positive deviation compared to guided volumes is mainly due to good production.
