Contamination has been the cause of most pet food recalls over the past nearly two decades with one incident in 2007 accounting for a quarter of all recalls. The Journal of Food Production published a review of US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recalls involving dog and cat products. The review examined 3,691 dog and cat product recalls that occurred from 2003 to 2022. On Feb. 12, the city council of Fort Dodge, Iowa, USA pledged US$1.6 million to expand Nestle Purina PetCare’s canned cat food manufacturing facility in the city and one of the few pet food plants in Iowa, local media outlet The Messenger reported. Two dog owners filed a class action lawsuit Pet Food in Mid America following a series of recalls by the pet food manufacturer due to the potential Salmonella contamination of various dog, cat and other pet foods.
