As a dedicated follower of weather forecasts, I took the opportunity to visit various sites on the peninsula on the first, and perhaps only, sunny day for a while, but only managed Dale airport, the Gann and Marloes Mere. Winter migrants are notable for their absence with only a single pair of Teal and Tufted Duck and female singles Wigeon and men Gadwall. No sign of Goldeneye or Garganey. A couple of those Mute the Swans they swim together and are obviously not a nest, but two Canada goose are at both ends of the mere and may have nestmates…
About 40 in the 80ish Golden Plover in a recently plowed field near Maidenhall Point at the National Trust’s Southwood Farm it is now very difficult to see despite strong breeding plumage. Further north in the swamp near the farm a Grasshopper Warbler is trembling, a Sedge Warbler is singing and a couple of Reed Buntings are enjoying the sun on a fence before racing off together. A crow followed a Buzzard carrying a young rabbit, but has no idea how to steal it and gives up the chase and a Kestrel is hunting nearby. There are several Willow Warbler,…
