Going birding in Costa Rica? I hope! The craze for tropical birding is constant and Costa Rica is no exception. Believe me, there is a lot to see in Costa Rica and always more. Over the past few days, my partner and I spent a few days birding and relaxing in the southern…
Pet owners, like many consumers, are increasingly concerned about sustainability in the products and brands they purchase. Recent surveys indicate the current level of concern in various countries. In a global consumer lifestyle survey conducted earlier this year by Euromonitor International, 65% of pet owners said they were concerned about climate change and were generally more likely than non-pet owners to pet to pursue “green” activities. The results of the survey, presented by Ekaterina Tretyakova, Euromonitor market research consultant, during Interzoo 2024, also showed that more pet owners in emerging markets are trying to have a positive impact on the environment:…
In the 47 years Guy Johnston has worked as a fisherman off the coast of British Columbia, he has watched friends and colleagues leave the trade as climate pressures mount.Johnston was a shrimp and salmon fisherman based in Cowichan Bay on the east coast of Vancouver Island who also spent time harvesting crab. He said predicting salmon runs using Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) estimates used to be straightforward. Within a small margin of error, scientists can generally say how big the runs will be, and therefore how many can be caught consistently. Today, the swings in size are so…
Connecticut Fisheries Report Matt on Black Hall Outfitters in Westbrook I was told: “Summer mode is now in full swing. Stripers are heavy on the reefs of the Central Sound, including The Race and Plum Gut. Don’t think you have to stick to the popular spots, though, because most smaller rock piles and points will also have stripers in. With sea bass season open on July 8th, look for the bite to come in strong as the fish will not be pressured and looking to feed porgy action is also on fire today, and with the inshore water warming up…

Costa Rica is a popular destination, especially during the winter. Warm and pleasant weather instead of slushy driveways? Toucans, parrots, macaws, and manakins? Throw in a few dozen hummingbirds and it’s a sweet combination! Although most birders visit Costa Rica in the winter, we also have a second, mini high season. That was this month, July. Yes, it’s summer in the northern hemisphere but no, it’s not hotter in Costa Rica. Time doesn’t work that way. If anything, the cloud cover makes Costa Rica cooler today than the sun-drenched February and March! This second high season started happening a few…
