NEW YORK – Animal Care Centers of New York City say they are over capacity and cannot accept any new dog surrenders.
“We have room for about 150 dogs and we currently have over 250 in all of our shelters,” said Risa Weinstock, President, and CEO of Animal Care Center.
Shelters house many types of dogs that may be a good fit for the right home, but the shelter said they were shocked by the number of surrenders in the past year.
Things have reached the point where dogs are literally kept in office spaces with workers due to lack of kennel space.
“We’re really asking the public to just reach out to their hearts and commute to adoption or foster care to help us,” shared Weinstock.
Since ACC limited their use about a week ago, more than 130 more dogs have come in, on top of the 260 they already have.
“We also see a lot of people surrendering a lot of stray dogs in particular,” Weinstock added.
For those who are convinced that they are not ready to take that step towards adopting a dog, there is always the option of fostering one; but if you take the plunge and find the perfect match, the staff here promise you won’t be taking that step alone.
“We provide so much support and so many resources to help you be a successful pet parent and we would just appreciate all New Yorkers to help us,” Weinstock added.
