JUNCTION CITY, Wis. (WSAW) – Central Wis has had a strange winter this season but that doesn’t stop events from happening.
Saturday was the 16th year of the ‘Fishin for a Mission’ event.
Usually, the fishermen are on the ice but the warm winter made this year’s event unusual. The ice wasn’t thick enough for fishing, so organizers thought of ways to bring the fun to the kids.
“Since we can’t go out on the ice, we want to make sure the kids have a chance to ‘fish’. So, I came up with a game where they can catch fish, or the flies,” said volunteer Marv Hafenbreadl.
This is the second time the event has had to stop their ice fishing. The first was in 2017. They still raised about $30,000 to help kids that year.
Even without ice fishing for the 2024 event, the organizers still managed to make the event a success.
“They’re not just crushed by a large part of it that’s taken out. They put it together and made it special,” said Rebecca Briskie, an attendee from Wausau.
People giving back to their community continue to put a smile on the faces of the organizers every year, especially when they see the total amount of money raised.
“We come from a great community, and the support of the community is why we’re able to do those things. So, we have to thank the community to make that happen,” said Joe Malone, a promoter for ‘Fishin for a Mission.
