North Oakland VFW Post 334 presented a check for $2,400 to the Oxford/Orion FISH Food Pantry’s Adopt-a-Shelf program on Feb. 7 at the ONTV Food Drive at the Orion Senior Center in Lake Orion. The food drive raised over $16,000 and a van full of food for FISH as part of the 2024 Food Drive.
Michelle Behm, president of Oxford/Orion FISH, said people can’t use their Bridge card for men’s and women’s personal products because of the FISH shortage. Then the VFW Post went out and bought $565 of men’s personal products and $221 of women’s products and delivered to FISH on Feb. 15 including six frozen turkeys.
This is the seventh year in a row that VFW Post 334 has adopted a shelf at FISH, and they encourage other businesses, community groups, or individuals to come out and Adopt-a-Shelf or make donations to FISH to help support the community.
This Adopt-a-Shelf program buys food to keep on the shelves each month for a year using donated funds. VFW Post 334 supports the pasta sauce shelf and the chunky soup shelf. Volunteers then pick up the purchased items and place them on shelves throughout the building, much like a small grocery store. Everyone involved in FISH are volunteers from the community.
The Oxford/Orion FISH Food Pantry provides groceries for people in need who currently live in Lake Orion, Oxford, Addison, or Oakland Township. Food is provided according to the size of each family and can range from 60 to 200 pounds per month.
With high food inflation in recent years, demand from the community continues to rise, with high demand for FISH. Seniors are faced with the choice of eating or taking their medicine. For those who need services or want to join the Adopt-a-Shelf program or make a donation, call 248-628-3933 or visit oxfordorionfish.org for more information. The Oxford/Orion FISH Food Pantry is at 1060 South Lapeer Road, Oxford.
