HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) -It’s the ultimate play date for pups on the Grand Strand. Petey’s Puppy Rides offers fun, food and friendship, all thanks to avid animal lover Karola Richardson and her pup, Mia, known around town as Petey from The Little Rascals.
“He has that patch, and he has that demeanor,” Richardson said.
Richardson said Petey was the inspiration behind the recently added field trips after launching his pet care and boarding company 16 years ago.
“Everything is very personalized for your pup,” she says. “We try to tailor everything to the needs and wants of your pups. Maybe parents want them to go to the beach for 30 minutes or an hour, so we’ll do that, maybe followed by ice cream.”
Richardson, his daughter Krista, and Petey, riding shotgun, zoom around town in colorful golf carts to pick up their puppy clients from south Myrtle Beach to Huntington Beach.
“Every puppy we get gives us the biggest congratulations you’ve ever seen. In fact, I think we’ve been knocked down a couple of times,” Richardson replied with a laugh.
We got to go along for one of their field trips. First we picked up Dexter, bundled up in a hoodie and still awake. Then we stopped by Surfside Beach to pick up three more puppies. Dozer and her sisters Penny and Madison were clearly excited to see their friends, but Richardson said the cart wouldn’t start until they were strapped into two safety harnesses.
Our field trip included dining al fresco at Benjamin’s Bakery at Surfside Beach and take a walk in the nearby park before heading home.
“Seeing the joy of every puppy. I mean, they’re really excited every time. They are like children,” said Richardson.
And Richardson said what Petey’s Puppy Rides is about.
“It’s just priceless. Priceless,” he said.
Richardson also mentioned that he plans to add another pup mobile to the fleet so they can service Pawleys Island and Litchfield Beach.
