Every month, Houston Matters turns to dogs…and cats, as we discuss the care and feeding of your canine and feline friends, with veterinarian Dr. Lori Teller from Meyerland Animal Clinic and Texas A&M University.
This month’s phase focuses on diet and exercise, which is a never-ending challenge for us, and often complicated too, for the dogs or cats in our lives.
In the audio above, Dr. Teller the essentials in dog or cat food, and how they vary from one breed to another. We also talk to him about pet food manufacturers’ food categories for certain types of dog or cat, based on age, activity, and even some geared towards certain medical conditions , and how pet owners can determine not only if they have chosen the right food for their dog or cat, but when to replace it. We also talk about pet food labels, how nutrition affects arthritis in older pets, “fresh” and “raw” food alternatives, and why to think about in the leftover minerals you share with your pet.
Exercise topics discussed in the audio above include: steps we can take to encourage more sedentary dogs or cats to exercise more, how we influence the exercise habits of our pets, how to attract them when we can’t keep up with them, and options for older dogs and cats who have been active, but may slow down as they age.
