Gov. announced Kathleen C. Hochul the schedule for New York’s 2024 Free Fishing Days, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy freshwater fishing without the need for a fishing license on certain designated days.
The six designated Free Fishing Days include Feb. 17 and 18 (Presidents’ Day Sunday), June 29 and 30, Sept. 28 (National Hunting and Fishing Day), and Nov. 11 (Veterans Day).
Individuals may engage in freshwater fishing activities on many New York lakes, ponds, streams and rivers on these designated days without the usual license requirements.
“The Free Fishing program provides a great opportunity for aspiring anglers to try freshwater fishing for the first time or former anglers to reconnect with one of America’s favorite pastimes,” Hochul said in a statement. “New York is blessed with an abundance of freshwater lakes, ponds, streams, and rivers, which allow for unforgettable fishing experiences that increase tourism and benefit the economy.”
State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil B. Seggos said the days are spread throughout the year “to allow anglers to enjoy freshwater fishing in a variety of climates.”
The initiative aims to introduce more people to freshwater fishing, promote recreation without the usual associated fees and encourage support for conservation through the eventual purchase of a state fishing license.
Since its inception in 1991, the Free Fishing Day program has aimed to remove barriers for people who might not normally engage in fishing, providing a free introduction to the sport and fostering a greater appreciation of conservation efforts. .
To support those interested in starting their fishing journey, DEC offers resources such as the I FISH NY Beginners Guide to Freshwater Fishing, a comprehensive guide that covers topics from setting up a fishing rod to understanding fishing regulations. DEC’s Places to Fish webpages, its YouTube channel featuring a video series, and the HuntFishNY app provide additional information and planning tools for fishing trips.
While Free Fishing Day offers an inclusive opportunity for all, participants are reminded that standard fishing regulations, aside from the license requirement, remain in effect. Outside of these designated days, anglers over the age of 16 must have a valid fishing license, available through the DEC website.
DEC provides “learn to fish” opportunities through approved free fishing clinics and recently revamped its Angler Achievement Awards Program.
The program recognizes anglers who catch impressive-sized fish, introducing new features such as the Youth Angler Category and an online entry form for convenient submission of qualifying catches via smartphones. All Angler Achievement Awards Program participants receive species-specific stickers to display on their gear.
