SAN ANTONIO – With the cold weather in San Antonio this week, Animal Care Services is reminding pet owners to bring pets indoors or face the consequences.
In a post on social media, ACS said they will have “zero tolerance” for weather-related violations. Anyone found violating the pet laws could face having their pet impounded, fined up to $2,000 and 180 days in jail for repeat offenders.
Animal Care Officers will be on patrol responding to potential violations.
Anyone who needs to report a concern can call the city’s Customer Service line at 3-1-1 or report it online. If you cannot reach 3-1-1, you can contact SAPD’s non-emergency line by dialing 210-207-7273.
ACS officials said there have been more than 400 calls for reports of animals left outside without shelter since Sunday night and officials are getting calls as quickly as possible.
ACS reminds people that it is always against the law to keep a dog on a leash and provides the following tips for keeping animals safe during cold weather:
-
Bring your pets inside to protect them from the cold.
-
Provide a shelter with three walls, a raised floor, and a roof for outdoor pets.
-
Make sure pets ALWAYS have access to food and clean water.
-
Before starting your car, check for any cats outside seeking warmth near the hood or tires.
