Known for their incredible ability to learn human language and speak words, often in the right context, African gray parrots are perhaps the most intelligent bird species commonly kept as pets. They have unique personalities and can be very entertaining as they speak sentences and even sing complete songs. As highly intelligent and highly social birds, African gray parrots need a lot of socialization to thrive as pets. They need to spend at least an hour or two every day outside their cages, interacting with their human “flock brothers,” and they need activities (including toys to interact with contact, TV viewing, and acceptable chews) in their cages to keep them psychologically stimulated. When they don’t have enough to do, they often get bored and engage in destructive behaviors, such as fur picking, yelling, and breaking furniture. In addition, after they become sexually mature (around 5-7 years old), they often choose a family member who is closest to them and may even be jealous of other people in the house. Therefore, it is important that they are socialized early in life with all members of the household and that they get used to socializing with new people, or they may become aggressive toward individuals with whom they are most bonded.
As medium-sized parrots, African gray parrots need a relatively large cage (as large as possible), as well as a play stand or perch outside their cages where they can sit when interacting with their human family members. They can be messy, throw food at times, and be loud as they whine for attention. They need fresh water every day, as well as pelleted food as their main diet, supplemented with smaller amounts of fresh vegetables and fruits every day. They also enjoy the occasional healthy snack like cooked pasta, eggs, or unsalted popcorn. They should have an annual veterinary check-up and regular grooming (including nail trimming) as needed.
When properly cared for with adequate mental stimulation, proper nutrition, and regular veterinary care, African gray parrots can live 30 years or more. If you’re looking for a highly social, lifelong pet that can provide endless companionship but requires a lot of daily attention, an African gray parrot may be a great match for you.
