When you’re looking for those big fish, they deserve a big fly to attract them! Today we look at the Humungus Booby, tied by Steve Cullen. This fly is a combination of two flies; the Humungus, a Scottish pattern originating from Loch Leven and the Booby, a pattern developed by Gordon Fraser in the 1980’s.
As Steve explains the key to a good Humungus for him is the choice of silver wire, explaining that really limp/soft silver wire is the best! Steve found that the big fish really liked the Polar UV Flash, so he added some to compliment the silver wire and add to the appeal of the patterns.
Bright white Marabou was added to create the iconic Humungus tail, the body was completed with a fine silver wire for the ribs, a very thin silver chenille and then to create that hacked body, a long saddle feather is tied.
Finally, this is where a beaded eye is tied to create a classic Humungus, but instead, a large array of booby eyes is tied and this creates the excitement needed to attract the fry feeding Trout .
All the materials needed to tie this fly are available from Glasgow Angling Center as listed below, but as always, if you need any help finding materials or replacements, we’d be happy to help.
