Our staff are not just normal staff members, they are also experienced anglers who have helped many customers get started in certain fishing disciplines, in Coarse, Game, Sea and Predator fishing! So, we asked our staff in Edinburgh, what their must-haves are for this Winter when it comes to rough fishing.
staff member, Callusesbreaks down her must-haves for this Winter:
Daiwa Feeder Combos are a great choice for someone who wants to have a crack at some feeder fishing this winter but doesn’t want to break the bank. The rod reel & line at £59-69.99 is an absolute bargain and I’ve had carp up to mid doubles on mine so they can definitely handle bigger fish. They also offer a float combo for a similar price.
Maggot feeders are an essential bit of kit for bottom fishing as the cold weather approaches. Whether your target is roach and perch or you’re still trying your luck for carp – worms are obviously an all year round bait but for me a real confidence booster in winter. I always use the Kamasan black cap feeder and while they offer a variety of weights, you will always have something to suit your fishing distance.
I would normally use them with Feedabeads as it makes cutting and changing feeders/feeder weights much easier!
I also like to use groundbait at this time of year as it is more likely to feed the fish, and tends to favor black match, worm meal and halibut style groundbaits. I save the sweeter stuff for the summer months.
To make fishing easier/more comfortable, I recommend the Preston Anychair adapter so you can always sit on your rod, and I use the Guru Reaper Headrest for a range of motion/positioning when setting up.
Obviously, a big part of winter fishing is making yourself comfortable on the bank in cooler conditions. It’s easier to enjoy when you’re not freezing! That said, here are a few items we really like for keeping the bench warm:
Daiwa Sleepskin – thermal base layers at this time of year are an absolute must, and at £49.99 you’ll be hard-pressed to find any better value than these.
Bridgedale Heavyweight socks – most of the staff at Edinburgh Angling Center swear by these in the winter.
Quality waterproofs – Vass or Guy Cotton – anyone who has done a bit of course will appreciate having waterproofs/outerlayers that are easy to wipe off or wash off are a must.
My favorite item of the year is the Yeti flasks. They can reliably keep your coffee/tea hot for hours and a hot drink on a very cold day is a real mood booster.
All of these items can be found in both our Glasgow and Edinburgh stores as well as on our website. If you need further help or assistance, come into one of our shops and ask a member of staff, alternatively you can e-mail or call any shop for more information!
